Now’s the time to apply for holiday jobs in SLO County — and here’s who’s hiring

It may only be October, but if you’re hoping to snag a holiday job this year, now’s the time to start looking.

Here’s a quick look at some of the places that are hiring seasonal workers this year, and what you need to know about applying. (All the job listings are as of Oct. 5.)

Best Buy

According to its website, the Best Buy store in San Luis Obispo is hiring for three seasonal or occasional positions: inventory/merchandising specialist, sales consultant and customer service specialist. All three positions require a “flexible schedule inclusive of holidays, nights and weekends.” After applying, interested applicants can expect to hear from the company within three days.


BevMo! is hiring seasonal sales associates for its Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo locations. The company offers an employee discount (though it doesn’t specify the amount on its website). Apply online at www.bevmo.com/careers-main/.

Gap/Old Navy/Banana Republic

Gap Inc., which also owns Old Navy and Banana Republic, offers seasonal workers a 50 percent discount at any of the company’s brands, flexible scheduling and career growth opportunities, according to its website. Open positions in the county include: stock, sales and brand associates for the Old Navy in Irish Hills Plaza, Gap in the Downtown Centre and Banana Republic on Court Street. Visit jobs.gapinc.com.


Francesca’s in San Luis Obispo is hiring seasonal stylists for its store on Monterey Street. The company offers competitive pay, a team member discount and growth opportunities, according to its website. To apply, visit www.francescas.com/category/guest-services/careers.do.


Sears holdings is hiring seasonal customer service representatives and cashiers at its Atascadero and Arroyo Grande Kmart locations. Apply online at jobs.sears.com.


Kohl’s is hiring seasonal retail sales and freight associates to work through the end of December. The company offers an associate discount and weekly pay. Positions are available at both the San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles locations. To apply, visit kohlscareers.com/seasonal-jobs-holiday-work.

Levi Strauss

Levis is hiring for part-time seasonal sales associates at the Outlet Mall in Pismo Beach. Workers receive a discount on company owned and operated stores and e-commerce sites, as well as special discounts with Apple, HP, Microsoft, Staples and AT&T Wireless. Michaels will hire more than 15,000 seasonal positions at its U.S. and Canadian stores this holiday season. According to a news release on the company’s investor relations website, more than 50 percent of seasonal positions transitioned to regular roles after the holidays last year. Seasonal workers receive competitive wages, flexible schedules and a 30 percent store discount. Apply online for either the San Luis Obispo or Paso Robles locations at michaels.com/storejobs.


The makeup and beauty company is hiring for temporary/seasonal stock associates and cashiers at its San Luis Obispo location on Court Street. Computer knowledge and at least one year in the retail or service industry are preferred. To apply, go online to jobs.sephora.com.


Target plans to hire 100,000 workers across the country for the holiday season, according to its corporate website. In some cases, that can mean applying for a position in store and receiving a conditional job offer that same day, the website says. The company is hosting hiring events at the San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles locations Oct. 13-15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., but interested parties can also apply online or in-person at the store at other times. Seasonal workers receive market competitive pay, flexible schedules and a 10 percent discount at Target and Target.com, plus 20 percent off fruits, veggies and Simply Balanced C9 merchandise.


If you’re thinking of applying at Walmart this holiday, you’re out of luck. The retailer announced it would once again give current associates more hours to cover the seasonal rush, rather than hiring temporary employees (it did this last year as well).
