The contract for San Luis Obispo’s new city manager was approved Tuesday night by the City Council.
Assistant City Manager Derek Johnson will take over the city’s top administrative position, which will be vacated by Katie Lichtig, starting Sept. 29. Johnson was appointed to the position Sept. 6 by a unanimous City Council.
Lichtig is leaving to become the new chief operating officer and assistant city manager for the city of Santa Monica.
Johnson will be responsible for development and implementation of an approximately $142 million budget, supervision of nine department heads, management of more than 400 employees with four represented employee associations/unions, in addition to service responsibilities that include police, fire, water and wastewater treatment.
Johnson’s annual base salary will be $209,900, less than Lichtig’s $230,464 annual salary.
