Family-operated eatery Martin’s Restaurant is expanding with a new Los Osos location, slated to open Saturday.

The restaurant currently only has one location, in Cayucos, where it has operated for more than 10 years, said Veronica Erdogan, who helps manage the restaurants. The Cayucos location serves both Italian and Mexican cuisine, with some American fare.

Erdogan’s father, Martin Escobar, owns the business and often cooks at the restaurant alongside Erdogan’s mother, Veronica Acuna.

Los Osos seemed like a good spot for expansion because the restaurant has a lot of customers in the area, Erdogan said. The owner of the property that Martin’s Restaurant occupies in Cayucos purchased the Los Osos space and asked if they wanted to open another location.

The space at 905 Los Osos Valley Road underwent a major remodel, Erdogan said. She declined to disclose financial information.

The Los Osos location will serve only Mexican food with many authentic dishes such as mole, a sauce that includes chili peppers and chocolate, and menudo, a traditional Mexican soup, Erdogan said. She added that there will be certain items available on different days of the week.

The new space will be more colorful and vibrant than the Cayucos location and will be decorated with Mexican artwork, Erdogan said. It will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Los Osos restaurant will likely staff about 12 to 14 people, a mix of full- and part-time employees.

There are no other expansion plans underway for Martin’s Restaurant, and Erdogan said the business will likely stay small.

“It’s hard work to own a restaurant; you have to be there constantly. It’s like a marriage,” she said. “If you’re not there, the feeling’s not the same.”
