Milestone Tavern Bar and Grill, a nearly 6,000-square-foot restaurant offering brick-oven pizza, steak, pasta, burgers, salads and sandwiches, will open early next year in the revamped University Square shopping center in San Luis Obispo.
It’s one of several new businesses going into the 5.6-acre center, which is at Santa Rosa Street and Foothill Boulevard and owned by developer Nick Tompkins. Others include Scout Coffee Co. (a second location), Blaze Pizza, Deli Delicious, @Nails, Supercuts, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Lassens Natural Foods & Vitamins and Rite Aid (which is relocating from its current spot in the Foothill Plaza shopping center). Some of the businesses are already open. Several current businesses have stayed put: Club 24 fitness club, Golden 1 Credit Union, Domino’s Pizza, Pita Pit and University Barber Shop.
Milestone Tavern, which will serve lunch and dinner as well as a weekend brunch, will be the 10th local bar and restaurant owned by Bill Hales and his business partners. They also own Shell Beach Brewhouse, Mother’s Tavern and Rooster Creek Tavern, among others. They formed a corporation, Foothill B&G Inc., to create the latest venture. Hales said nine local business people own Milestone Tavern. He declined to disclose their investment.
The restaurant’s name was selected for a variety of reasons, Hales said, in part because it represents a personal milestone (their 10th bar/restaurant).
The full-service restaurant at 972 E. Foothill Blvd. will occupy the building that formerly housed Bank of America. It will seat about 180 to 200 guests and include a patio and banquet area.
While the menu will be geared toward a lower price point, Hales said they are looking to offer a nice dining experience a notch above other more casual food options in that section of town.
Work on framing and electrical is underway. Milestone Tavern’s opening, along with the completion of the shopping center, is slated for February.
