Valerie Vaz, who has been advertising sales director at The Fresno Bee since 2012, has been named vice president of advertising at The Tribune.
She will move to San Luis Obispo County and begin her new job July 6.
As vice president of advertising, Vaz will be responsible for driving the development of new products and initiatives and help local businesses connect with their customers through The Tribune’s portfolio of print and digital products. She will oversee a staff of 21.
Tribune Publisher Tom Cullinan noted that Vaz has a proven track record of success and praised her strong work ethic, keen customer focus and creativity.
“Val will be able to hit the ground running and will very quickly become a valuable partner to her colleagues and customers in San Luis Obispo County,” he said.
Vaz, 50, said she’s excited to work with The Tribune’s advertising staff.
“For me, it was an opportunity to stay in an industry I believe in and am very passionate about,” she said, adding that there are many growth opportunities here. Furthermore, she loves San Luis Obispo County — and being able to call it home.
Vaz, a native of Escalon, a small town north of Modesto, said that while growing up she spent many vacations with her family in Pismo Beach. And since living in Fresno, this area has become her weekend getaway.
While there, Vaz was promoted to retail sales manager and then director for new business development, where she was responsible for new product development, direct marketing, niche publications and online initiatives.
Vaz joined The Fresno Bee in 2008 as the classified advertising director and through the years assumed roles of increased responsibility and scope.
As advertising sales director at The Fresno Bee, her achievements include the development of Central Valley Magazine, a monthly lifestyle publication, and the launch of Central Valley Flavors, Living Here and a new, improved Real Estate section. Most recently, Vaz played a critical role in the development of a community newspaper, The Clovis Independent.
The Fresno Bee, The Modesto Bee and The Tribune are owned by McClatchy, which also owns 26 other daily newspapers nationwide.
