French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo was named earlier this month by Truven Health Analytics to its “100 Top Hospitals” list for 2015 in the category for mid-sized community hospitals nationwide.
Truven Health Analytics, formerly the health care division of Thomson Reuters, has produced the hospital ranking since 1993. To evaluate hospitals, Truven uses specific healthcare and business criteria: inpatient and post-hospitalization mortality rates, complications, patient safety, average length of stay, patient satisfaction, clinical standards of care, readmission rates for heart attacks and pneumonia, expenses and profitability, and Medicare payments.
Hospitals are ranked within categories based on their size and whether they are teaching hospitals. French was among 14 California hospitals, including five mid-sized hospitals, named to the 2015 list and the only one in San Luis Obispo County. French Hospital also made the list in 2012.
“The 100 Top Hospitals study is designed to identify highly effective leadership teams that have achieved high performance across the whole hospital’s balanced performance clinically, operationally and financially, and have generated high patient perception of care,” said Truven senior vice president Jean Chenoweth.
