The San Luis Obispo Downtown Association recently recognized about 24 businesses for their beautification efforts at its 26th Annual Beautification Awards Breakfast.

The awards are given to those businesses that made physical or aesthetic improvements in 2014 toward keeping the downtown area beautiful, according to an association news release.

The Downtown Association’s Design Committee oversaw the process, from selecting the candidates to presenting the awards. Categories included tenant improvements, maintenance, merchandising and several special awards.

Top honors include the Mayor’s Award, this year given to the Johnson Building at 1041 Chorro St.; the Chairperson’s Award, given to The Gold Concept at 740 Higuera St.; and the Executive Director’s Award, given to the city of San Luis Obispo for the “Make Change Count” donation meters around downtown.
