Clothing retailer H&M will open its first San Luis Obispo County location in downtown San Luis Obispo in 2016, as part of Copeland Properties’ Chinatown development.

The new 20,000-square-foot store will be located in a new building that will be constructed in the 800 block of Monterey Street, developer Tom Copeland said. The store has not yet been assigned an official address, he said.

The new store is a part of Copeland Properties’ Chinatown mixed-use redevelopment, which consists of about 50,000 square feet of retail space and 32 apartments on Monterey Street and an 80-room hotel on Palm Street. Copeland Properties expects to break ground on the retail part of the project in January and the hotel next summer.

The new clothing store is scheduled to open in fall of 2016, according to an H&M news release. This will bring the total number of H&M locations in the state to 69; the next closest H&M is in Santa Barbara.

A media representative for H&M declined to provide further details.

Hennes & Mauritz AB, commonly referred to as H&M, is an international clothing chain based in Stockholm, Sweden, that specializes in “fashion-forward and affordable clothing,” according to the release. It has 355 locations across the United States and employs approximately 15,000 people. Its annual revenue was $20.38 billion in 2013.
