New restaurant opening in Pismo Beach next spring

A new restaurant is opening in Pismo Beach.

Old Custom House Inc., the restaurant division of Compass Health Inc., is opening the eatery at 175 Pomeroy Ave., the site of the former Pierside Seafood. This is the third Pismo Beach restaurant for Compass Health Inc., which owns and operates restaurants and skilled nursing facilities. The Grover Beach-based company also owns Ventana Grill and is set to open a restaurant in the space formerly occupied by Alex Bar-B-Q.

As well, the company owns the Custom House, Mr. Rick's and Mission Pizza in Avila Beach. Darren Smith, Compass Health's chief executive officer, said the company decided to open another restaurant because of a strengthening economy and solid tourism.

"It also helps being located in Pismo Beach at a time when the city is especially supportive of businesses that enhance Pismo," Smith said.

The 18,000-square-foot space is being remodeled. Preparations include building two custom kitchens, taste-testing recipes for the new menus, and designing logos, said Smith, who declined to disclose how much the company is investing in the venture.

The family-friendly restaurant will feature outdoor decks and panoramic ocean views. A bar and grill called Wooly's, a nod to Compass Health president Mark Woolpert, will occupy the downstairs space and will be "fun and a little surfy," Smith said. A separate seafood restaurant and bar will occupy the upstairs. The restaurant is expected to open in March 2015 and will employ about 100 people.
