New Atascadero gallery offers art classes for adults

A new art gallery offering art classes for adults has just opened in Atascadero.

ärt/, located at 5806 Traffic Way in Atascadero’s Historic District, will hold its grand opening event Oct. 12 during the Open Studios Art Tour.

The art gallery is an effort of three former art teachers — Marie Ramey and Kate Moldauer of Atascadero and Laure Carlisle of Templeton — to bring more art to Atascadero. The gallery will feature works by the three, as well as works from other local artists.

“Atascadero is waking up,” Ramey said. “For a while, the shopping center we are in was only retail, but now it has opened up. It’s art, and wine and tea and all sorts of wonderful things.”

The new gallery is just under 1,200 square feet, Ramey said, and will begin to offer art classes following its grand opening. Ramey, who previously taught at Cuesta College, will lead beginner and intermediate drawing, while Moldauer, a past instructor at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, will teach a class in figure drawing and painting. Former San Diego high school art teacher Carlisle will teach a class in “innovative ways to use art media,” she said.

The classes will be aimed at adults and not children, Ramey said, because there are already establishments nearby that cater to children’s art classes.

Ramey did not know the exact cost of opening the gallery, though she estimated that the trio had invested about $1,500 each.
