Atascadero native Jay DeCou was honored as the Atascadero Chamber of Commerce’s 2011 Citizen of the Year.
DeCou was chosen to receive the honor because of the many contributions he has made to the community, starting when he was a student at Atascadero High School.
After graduating, DeCou joined his family’s business, DeCou Lumber Co., where he has remained for more than 40 years.
As a local business owner, DeCou participated in many projects and organizations, including Eagle Scouts and Colony Days.

This past year, DeCou Lumber participated in the Shea Home Giveaway that raised more than $700,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
DeCou’s involvement in Boy Scout Troop 226 has spanned more than 10 years. He has served as assistant scoutmaster and scoutmaster.
Active with the Atascadero Rotary Club, DeCou was president from 2009-10.
He’s on the Santa Lucia Gun Range board, where he serves as the youth education and outreach coordinator. DeCou is a state-certified hunter-safety instructor and has taught hunter- safety classes for more than 15 years.
DeCou has attended St. Williams Catholic Church for more than 30 years.
DeCou has been married for 30 years to Babette. They have three children — Robert, 28, Steven, 22 and Katie, 20 -– all of whom were selected as “Top 30” graduates while they were seniors at Atascadero High School.
