A locally founded tech support company has moved to a larger office to accommodate a growing staff and customer base.
Digital Foundation, Inc., founded by Joshua Erdman of Santa Maria in 2003, has moved within San Luis Obispo to a 2,200-square-foot location at 712 Fiero Lane. The company, with four full-time and six part-time employees, is co-owned by Erdman and Travis Hasson of Atascadero.
Digital Foundation outfits businesses with comprehensive network solutions, including network design, security, maintenance and installation. It has more than 30 clients ranging from five to 100 computers each and spanning from Montana to Connecticut.
The company’s sales doubled in its first years from 2003 to 2005. Growth then slowed to about 30 percent year over year until the past year, in which revenue grew 50 percent. Erdman attributes last year’s growth to the tech needs of the medical industry.
The growth has not been without challenges, he said.
“There is no business that can say they haven’t been affected by the economy yet we haven’t lost any clients because of the economy,” Erdman said.
Instead, some businesses cannot afford to replace aging computers, which makes technical assistance demands heavier.
Rather than charge an hourly fee to rescue clients during a technical crisis, Digital Foundation charges a monthly subscription and troubleshoots on a regular basis to prevent such events.
“We don’t like to throw money at problems. We are the types of people who like to take things apart to figure out why and how it works,” Erdman said.
The company’s part-time employees have been technology students, many of whom have moved on to work at Fortune 500 companies, he said.
