SLO tourism business district and Cal Poly partner up to promote area

San Luis Obispo’s Tourism Business Improvement District has announced a $25,000 advertising deal with Cal Poly Athletics for the 2011-12 academic year.

The sponsorship makes the district the exclusive lodging sponsor of Cal Poly Athletics, according to its publicists.

The district is a city agency that taxes 37 downtown San Luis Obispo hotels to finance tourism promotion.

The sponsorship includes 525 room-nights for visiting sports teams at San Luis Obispo hotels that are part of the district in exchange for placements in commercials; on stadium video boards and signs at Janssen Field, Baggett Stadium, Mott Gym and Spanos Stadium; as well as in email newsletters sent to thousands of alumni, spectators and student athletes.

The promotional spots are to highlight what were described as dynamic videos and interactive online applications, giving viewers a glimpse of the variety of attractions in and around San Luis Obispo.

The district also plans to host giveaways for season tickets and a Stampede Club membership to all Cal Poly sporting events through its social sharing site, www.ShareSLO.com.

This is the second major Cal Poly Athletics sponsorship announced this month. French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo recently signed a five-year, $800,000 marketing deal that’s the largest corporate sponsorship in university history.
