Biz Buzz: Wine bar opens in Morro Bay

Stax Wine Bar and Tasting Room recently opened for business at 1099 Embarcadero in Morro Bay.

Located across from the iconic smoke stacks that inspired its name, Stax offers more than 100 varieties of wine. Choices will vary every couple of weeks.

“Morro Bay needed a cool wine bar,” said Stax owner Giovanni DeGarimore. “And of course the location is excellent. We feature small, artisanal, one-off winemakers. It’s different from what people get at the grocery store.”

The 1,500-square-foot retail space that used to house the store As You Wish has undergone a complete remodel. The outside of the building has been updated with a slate exterior. The inside features hardwood floors, a granite bar, art work and a full kitchen.

Appetizers and meat and cheese plates are on the menu. Two types of wine tasting are also offered: Five for $5 and Five for $10. The price depends on the wines you choose.

“People can get a plate of food and a glass of wine for under $20,” DeGarimore said.

Stax is open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

DeGarimore is no stranger to retail along the Embarcadero. He also owns Giovanni’s Fish Market, located down the street from Stax on Front Street.
