Joseph M. Castro, Jr., 32, moved to San Luis Obispo from Oxnard to study psychology and child development at Cal Poly. A first generation university graduate and “passionate” Buddhist, he runs a local men’s division of Soka Gakkai International, a Buddhist network that promotes peace, culture and education. In 2004, he joined the Economic Opportunity Commission of San Luis Obispo County, now Community Action Partnership. Castro, the organization’s family community partnership coordinator, says: “I’ve been able to initiate a profound cultural shift within my agency and the Latino community we serve.” His Male/Father Involvement Project helps hundreds of men and agency workers resolve paternal challenges. He’s also completed Leadership San Luis Obispo and Vision Unida Leadership Development.
