French Hospital Medical Center Foundation in August will honor Noreen Martin as its 2017 Louis Tedone, MD, Humanitarian Award winner for her leadership and philanthropic efforts in the San Luis Obispo community.
The award — which honors an individual’s dedication to improving the health and well-being of their communities — was established in 2006 and named after Tedone, who served for 45 years as an area health care provider.
It will be given at the foundation’s annual Celebration of Caring Gala on Aug. 19, according to a French Hospital Medical Center news release.
Martin and her late husband in the late 1990s founded San Luis Obispo-based Martin Resorts, whose properties include Avila Lighthouse Suites, Pismo Lighthouse Suites, the Paso Robles Inn, Inn at the Cove and Shore Cliff Hotel. She stepped down as CEO of the company earlier this year but continues to advise the board as its chairman.

She helped create the first countywide tourism marketing district in 2015, and now serves on the state tourism board.
Martin has also supported local causes by “dedicating time and philanthropic resources to local nonprofit organizations,” the news release said.
She and her husband, Dr. Chris Hulburd, serve on the Hearst Cancer Resource Center Advisory Committee for French Hospital Medical Center. The two recently established the $300,000 Martin Hulburd Family Cancer Education Fund, which will support free educational programs for those diagnosed with cancer.
The Paso Robles Children’s Museum and Visit San Luis Obispo County are also among the organizations Martin supports.
Past Humanitarian Award winners include Dr. Louis Tedone, Dr. Ke-Ping Tsao, Rob Rossi, Stephen Hearst, Dr. Jac Pedersen, Phyllis Madonna, Jim Copeland and Frank and Betsey Kelton.
