Bike ride benefiting arthritis research to roll through SLO County

San Luis Obispo County motorists will share the road Wednesday and Thursday with 250 cyclists participating in the 12th annual Arthritis Foundation California Coast Classic Bike Tour.

Bicyclists will make their way from Big Sur to San Simeon Creek Campground on Wednesday afternoon, camping there overnight.

At about 8 a.m. Thursday, they’ll heading south on Highway 1 to Morro Bay, then taking Turri Road, Los Osos Valley Road and Foothill Boulevard, arriving in downtown San Luis Obispo between noon and 2 p.m. along Chorro and Higuera streets.

Riders will take Ontario Road and Avila Beach Drive to Shell Beach Drive to the Oceano Dunes Campground. They’ll head south from there Friday morning.

The 525-mile ride, which began Sunday in San Francisco and ends Sunday in Santa Monica, is expected to raise nearly $1 million to help those afflicted with arthritis, a disease that affects 50 million Americans.
