Events planned in San Luis Obispo County to mark the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks include:
9/11 American Thunder 11th Anniversary Remembrance: Barbecue and rally for the troops. 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Mitchell Park, San Luis Obispo. Barbecue $10 or free to all active military personnel in uniform; Keynote speaker is retired Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Norm Marous. Featuring Vandenberg Air Force Base honor guard. Visitors are asked to bring dried food, toiletries, health items, books and other items for American troops abroad.
9/11 Remembrance service: Hosted by American Legion 66 of San Luis Obispo and The Men’s Club at Laguna Lake Golf Course. 10 a.m. Sept. 11 at Laguna Lake Golf Course, 11175 Los Osos Valley Road. Featuring speakers Mayor Jan Marx and Tony Cippola.
Cambria 9/11 observance: It is dedicated to Officer Brian Murphy, first on scene at the Sikh temple shooting in August. North Coast hometown heroes also will be honored. The memorial is sponsored by the Sons of American Legion Post No. 432 and other community members. All are invited to join in a short, speechless ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Building flag stand, 1000 Main St. at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a free barbecue.
Grover Beach 11th annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony: The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which runs from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Ramona Garden Park Center, 993 Ramona Ave. There will be a public comment period at the end of the ceremony to give people a chance to share their thoughts.
The event also includes an art show with many items, including a piece of steel from the World Trade Center, memory books, paintings, photography and other memorabilia donated for display by local artists and citizens. The art show will open with a concert scheduled for Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. as part of the Sizzlin’ Summer Concert Series. It will also be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Anyone wishing to volunteer as a docent for the art show is asked to call 473-4580.
