A troubled stretch of beach just south of the Pismo Pier is in its second day of a health advisory today after water testing showed high levels of bacteria.
High bacteria were detected during weekly sampling and follow-up sampling continued to show unhealthy levels of bacteria on Wednesday, said Liberty Amundson, county environmental health specialist. Further samples were taken the results of those tests are expected today.
Pigeons roosting beneath the pier are the suspected source of the bacteria. Pismo Beach officials have proposed draping nets beneath the pier to exclude the pigeons.
High bacterial levels put swimmers at heightened risk of ear, eye and skin infections.
