Drivers will face detours in downtown Atascadero due to bridge construction

Drivers heading to downtown Atascadero should find an alternate route this week as crews close parts of two streets for construction on the Lewis Avenue Bridge.

East Mall from Palma Avenue to Lewis Avenue and Lewis Avenue from East Mall to West Mall was closed this morning as crews continue working on the $6.2 million suspension bridge.

Work is expected to continue through July 13, according to the city.

Atascadero leaders say the bridge will provide a much-needed link from the downtown area near the Sunken Gardens to the planned Colony Square retail plaza at El Camino Real and Morro Road.

City officials expect the bridge to be open by Thanksgiving.
