Vandals hit school in Atascadero

Two 14-year-old suspects were arrested Sunday around 2 p.m. after allegedly vandalizing the roof of Santa Rosa Academic Academy Elementary School in Atascadero, according to the city’s police department.

The teens fled on foot after an officer patrolling the area spotted them allegedly throwing tiles off the school’s roof. The officer tried to apprehend them, but the two male suspects fled on foot and jumped a fence trying to escape. A police canine named Zeke helped police locate the suspects who were hiding about 40 feet from the school’s fence.

The suspects were taken into custody on suspicion of for felony vandalism and later released to their parents after receiving citations to appear in court.

The Atascadero Unified School District assessed the damage to the roofing tiles, air conditioning units and a picnic table at around $5,000. Previous vandalism incidents at the school caused an estimated $30,000 in damage – which led to the department to assign an officer for extra patrol.
