Man arrested after allegedly stealing a woman's purse and pushing her to the ground in SLO bar

A 43-year-old Montana man was arrested on suspicion of strong-arm robbery early Thursday morning after he allegedly grabbed a woman’s purse in a San Luis Obispo bar and pushed the woman to the ground.

Employees at Marti’s Bar at 673 Higuera St. called police at 1 a.m. to say they were detaining a man, later identified as Scott Robert Holgate.

According to witnesses, Holgate had been watching people in the bar for about 30 minutes when a woman, whose purse was on a table behind her, started talking to someone else.

Holgate allegedly grabbed the purse and tried to run for the door, but the woman grabbed both the purse and Holgate. He then allegedly pushed the woman to the floor and tried to continue running, but other bar customers and employees caught him.

No one was injured during the incident.

Holgate was arrested on charges of second degree robbery and booked at County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
