County environmental health officials have posted signs advising people to stay out of the water at Morro Bay City Beach due to high bacterial levels.
The water sample was taken immediately south of Morro Creek. However, the creek is not flowing into the ocean and is unlikely to be the source of the bacteria, said Liberty Amundson, environmental health specialist.
A new sample was taken today when the advisory signs were posted. The signs will stay up until a sample comes back showing safe bacterial levels. Twenty popular beaches in the county are sampled are sampled weekly.
