Big rig vs. pickup leads to injuries for South County men early Wednesday

An Oceano man was seriously injured Wednesday when he collided head-on with a big rig.

Joshua Salazar, 23, was treated and released from Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, according to a hospital spokesperson.

The driver of the big rig, Jose Zarate, 37, of Nipomo, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Marion Medical Center in Santa Maria.

Both men were wearing their seatbelts during the crash.

The wreck happened when Salazar was driving a pickup truck east on Highway 1 near Sheridan Road and Zarate was driving in the opposite direction preparing to turn left onto Sheridan Road.

Salazar thought Zarate was attempting to turn left in front on him so he slammed on his brakes and veered to the right. But the big rig drove straight, instead.

Salazar lost control of the truck and crossed the center divider head-on into the big rig.

The big rig, which was carrying two flatbed trailers with pallets, veered right onto the dirt and struck a fence and a power pole. The crash caused a power outage in the area.
