The county’s environmental health services division has scheduled three free tire collection days in June for county residents.
Collections will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Atascadero Lake Park, 9100 Morro Road on June 9; at Nipomo High School, 525 N. Thompson Ave. in Nipomo June 16; and at San Luis Obispo High School, 1499 San Luis Dr. June 23.
The county says that up to nine tires will be accepted per vehicle and that tires must be removed from the rims. They add that tires from commercial businesses will not be accepted, nor will large heavy equipment and tractor tires be accepted.
Bring documentation that you are a resident of San Luis Obispo County, the county warns.

Forty million waste tires are generated each year in California, representing more than one per person, the county notes. They pose a fire hazard when improperly stored, release toxic smoke and residues when burned, and provide a place for mosquitoes to lay their eggs when standing water is left in them.
