Office Depot said to be opening store in Atascdero

Office Depot plans to open a new store in Atascadero, a local developer said today.

Developer John Wilson of JMW Management has confirmed that the office supply chain has signed a lease for the former McNamara Electric in Mission Oaks at the Annex, previously the Atascadero Factory Outlets.

Office Depot marks the latest chain to open in Mission Oaks since it abandoned its efforts to attract outlet shoppers, Wilson said. Discount retailer Dollar Tree moved in earlier this month and the developer said he expects to finalize a lease with another regional retailer this week.

Corporate spokeswoman Melissa Perlman said she could not confirm Office Depot’s plans for Atascadero, adding that the chain does not typically comment until an opening date is set.

The shopping center sits adjacent to a planned Wal-Mart Supercenter and developer The Rottman Group’s proposed Annex retail complex. Wilson has invested more than $1 million to remodel the aging center since he bought it from Atascadero developer Kelly Gearhart.

Wilson said continued development will transform the now-quiet corner into an attractive shopping hub.

“Stuff is going to happen there,” he said. “I think there’s going to be great things happening at that corner.”

The 10,000-square-foot Office Depot will occupy the former home McNamara Electric, which moved to a new store at 7395 El Camino Real on May 1, employee Heidi Barrett said. -- Stephen Curran
