Philip Jones, the Grover Beach man who pleaded guilty to shooting UCSB graduate student Jarrod Davidson, has died. He was 52.
Jones died Saturday of lung cancer at the California Medical Facility, a correctional institution in Vacaville, said Lt. Dionne Hudnall, a facility spokeswoman.
Jones was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for his role in the killing of Davidson, his daughter’s 27-year-old ex-husband.
Jones had been at the prison since March 2006, Hudnall said. During court proceedings, Jones insisted that his young granddaughter was being molested by his former son-in-law, according to the Santa Barbara News-Press. But Davidson’s family members said that was a false accusation.
