Firefighter, truck driver have facial injuries after tire blows

A firefighter and driver were injured in San Luis Obispo Thursday after a tire blew following a truck fire.

Driver Pedro Llamas, whose city of residence was unknown, pulled over his double-trailer truck hauling grain feed after a brake part caught fire around 9 a.m. on southbound Highway 101 near the Los Osos Valley Road off-ramp , San Luis Obispo City Fire Department officials said.

Llamas extinguished the blaze and was looking under the second bed of the truck alongside a San Luis Obispo City firefighter when the tire overheated and blew, peppering the pair with debris, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Andrew Kenny.

Both men were being treated for facial injuries and were taken to local hospitals by San Luis Obispo Ambulance.

Fire officials declined to release the name of the firefighter until his family was notified.
