Brrr: unusually cold for a morning in May

Cool temperatures chilled San Luis Obispo County this morning, with the mercury falling to 42 degrees at Cal Poly, said Jamie Meier, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

That did not break the record low reading for the date, however: A temperature of 36 was recorded in San Luis Obispo on May 22, 1974.

The broad bank of fog sitting just offshore helped keep temperatures cool, Meier said.

The temperature should warm to about 74 degrees in San Luis Obispo today, while highs in the North County will be in the mid-to-high 80s. The coast will remain cool, with highs only in the mid-60s.
