Driver arrested after pedestrian is hit

A Clovis man was arrested late Friday in San Luis Obispo after he allegedly struck and injured a pedestrian in a crosswalk.Brian Dean Fairless, 42, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and injuring a person, San Luis Obispo Police said.Fairless was driving west on Higuera Street around 11:25 p.m. when he passed a vehicle that was stopped in an adjacent lane for a pedestrian.Heather McDermot, 25, of San Luis Obispo, was crossing Higuera Street at Garden Street in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by a Chevy pick-up driven by Fairless, police said. She was injured on the right side of her body and taken to French Hospital.Hospital officials said Saturday McDermot was not a patient.Fairless was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and was taken to French Hospital for a blood test before being booked at County Jail on suspicion of DUI. Police said he was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.Jail officials said Saturday Fairless was not in custody.
