A man tried to take a $1,200 violin from a 13-year-old girl Wednesday in San Luis Obispo, police said.
The Templeton girl was riding a county bus from the North County to San Luis Obispo, and exited at Osos and Palm streets downtown about 4:15 p.m.
She began walking southbound on Osos toward Monterey when the man, later identified as 45-year-old David J. Gellegos, allegedly rode up behind her on a bicycle and tried to forcefully grab the violin case. The girl was able to hold onto the case while the man rode away.
At 6:45 p.m., police saw Gallegos, a transient, on a bicycle on Madonna Road at El Mercado. The victim later identified him as a suspect, and he was arrested on suspicion of attempted grand theft and was booked into County Jail with bail set at $10,000.
