SLO Airport to get millions in federal grants for runway extension

The county airport will receive $8.4 million in federal grants for transportation and public safety projects, Rep. Lois Capps announced today. The grants will be used to increase safety on the county’s extended runway.

“We are extremely pleased that a grant award will be made for this most important project,” said Klaasje Nairne, airports manager for the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport.

“This grant falls on the heels of our $15 million dollar runway extension project and …will allow us to meet all the runway safety area requirements on the extended runway.”

The county airport has been steadily making improvements, in addition to the runway extension. This past week the Board of Supervisors agreed in principle to a new parking structure, and service to Salt Lake City debuts in June. A new terminal and other changes also are in the works
