The Oceano Community Services District will discuss tonight whether it should look into buying the 584 acres of land owned by the county in the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area.
The state’s lease agreement with the county expires June 2008.
Director Vern Dahl proposed the discussion since several locals, especially from Oceano, have advocated for keeping local control of the property, which makes up more than 30 percent of the off-road riding area. The state has made a $4.8 million offer on the land and the county’s Board of Supervisors has been meeting in closed session to discuss the potential sale.
“We have to have a discussion at the board level to see if we even want to look into the possibility (of buying the land),” Dahl said. “This is mainly a discussion to see if want to spend the effort.”

Dahl acknowledged that the district will need to research whether it can afford buying the land as well as jurisdiction issues before moving forward.
The meeting starts at 6:30 at the district building, 1655 Front St., in Oceano.
