Barbecue sauce as blood? Alleged prank leads to arrests

Two San Luis Obispo men playing a prank on a neighbor by smearing barbecue sauce on them to make it look like they were bleeding were arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public.

Police said a woman called 911 at around 5:45 p.m. Saturday hysterically reporting that two men were fighting near her apartment.

Officers responded to the 2000 block of South Higuera Street at around 5:45 p.m. and found Hans Edward Borkin, 45, leaving one of the apartments appearing to be covered in blood.

After additional units arrived, officers said Borkin refused to cooperate with officers after being told several times to get on the ground.

Officers said they believed the blood on his body was real and did not know if there was anyone inside the apartment or if there were any weapons. They used a Taser and arrested him on suspicion of resisting a police officer.

Officers said Borkin and his brother, Steven Arcene Borkin, 32, were playing a joke on their neighbor by putting barbecue sauce all over their bodies to make it seem as if the two were fighting and covered in blood.

Steve Borkin was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public. The two men were booked in county jail with bail set at $753 for Hans Borkin and $360 for Steve Borkin.
