CHP identified victim of Highway 41 wreck

The CHP identified the victim of this morning's fatal accident on Highway 41 as a 70-year-old Atascadero woman. Her name is being withheld as authorities contact her next of kin.

Traffic is still backed up from the crash just south of Bear Ridge, about 5 miles east of Morro Bay on the highway. Westbound vehicles are being allowed through now, but drivers getting ready to head east toward Morro Bay are being turned around at Highway 1and told to go north on Highway 101.

Eastbound traffic is expected to be reopened on Highway 41 around 10:45 a.m.

The accident happened around 8:50 a.m. CHP officer Connie Hawkins said the woman was headed west on the highway when, for unknown reasons, her silver Suzuki SUV veered off the road and struck a eucalyptus tree. The cause of the victim's death was not apparent this morning.
