Space available for Arroyo teen police academy

There is still room for eight youth to join the Arroyo Grande Police Department’s Teen Academy.

Junior High and High School students between the ages of 14 and 18 can participate in the eight-week academy, which covers many facets of policing.

The class meets from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday nights, starting April 17 and finishing June 5.

The purpose of the class is to educate students who may be interested in a law enforcement career, or who may just want to learn more about policing, according to the department. Class topics include crime prevention, community policing, traffic laws, drug recognition, firearm simulations, DUI arrests and investigative procedures, the K9 program and the Explorer program for youth.

High school students who complete all eight sessions may be eligible for school credit.
