Give gift of a home to older shelter dogs

‘Being older doesn’t mean a dog is past his or her prime. Like a good wine, they often improve with age. Sherman is a good example of that. “Sherman has the wisdom of an older dog: He walks well on a leash, has excellent house manners, is quiet and knows his basic obedience.

Like a younger dog, he also loves to play fetch, go for walks and ride in the car. Sherman is also content to lounge around the house while you are away, whereas a younger dog might get into trouble.

“A lot of people coming to animal shelters have a hard time understanding that an older dog might be a better match for their lifestyle.

“Another plus of adopting Sherman is the senior adoption fee rebate from the Animal Shelter Adoption Partners. If you adopt a San Luis Obispo County Animal Services’ dog or cat that is at least 8 years old, ASAP will rebate $35 of the adoption fee.

“If you’re in the market for two dogs, you could adopt Sherman and the dog he arrived with — Indie — and save $70. The nice thing about adopting two compatible dogs is they will keep each other company while you are away.

“Christmas is a wonderful time of giving, and giving the gift of a home to a senior dog or cat is a beautiful gift indeed.”
