A popular sushi restaurant just opened a new location in the San Luis Obispo Public Market, serving up fresh fish and rolls with a liquor license on the way.

Goshi Sushi had enormous bouquets of flowers sent from its regulars to celebrate its grand opening on May 13 at the SLO Public Market at 3885 S. Higuera St.

It took over a year for everything to be finalized for the restaurant to move in to its new location, manager Jacob Yamaguchi told The Tribune, but now that its doors are officially open, everyone on staff is “really excited.”

The restaurant’s first location in SLO inside The Creamery Marketplace is here to stay, Yamaguchi said, but it was the parking situation that encouraged the owners to look for another place to serve their famous rolls.

“Parking was really hard downtown, so they wanted to make it easier for some people,” Yamaguchi said. “This location has more actual nigiri and less kitchen items.”

Yamaguchi said that there is a bit of “overlap” in terms of the two locations’ menus, where the new spot has more fresh fish and no soba, but instead has hearty udon.

The most popular rolls include the spicy albacore with garlic chips and the seared tuna with black pepper. Prices range from $3.50 for miso soup to $55 for the classic Goshi Nigiri Dinner, which includes 10 pieces of nigiri chosen by the chef.

The sushi restaurant’s liquor license is posted in the shop’s glass door, with it being only a matter of time before the spot is approved to serve beer, sake and wine, and is hoping to keep it simple in terms of drinks.

“Maybe some wine,” he said, “But nothing too crazy.”
