Highly Controversial Music Icon Turns 49 Today

Hate him or love him, there is no denying the talent and impact this legendary figure, who turns 49 today, has had on the music industry. Now one of the most controversial figures in entertainment, he is one of the most influential pop-culture icons of the 21st century.

On this day, June 8, in 1977, producer, rapper and fashion designer Kanye West was born in Atlanta, Georgia.

Before exploding onto the scene in 2004 with his debut album, The College Dropout, West produced for some of the biggest names in hip-hop and R&B of the late '90s and early 2000s, including Jay-Z, Ludacris, Janet Jackson and Alicia Keys.

Starting in 1999, after more than four years of work on The College Dropout, featuring hip-hop classics like "Jesus Walks," "Through the Wire" and "All Falls Down," West became an instant sensation. The debut work earned the artist Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song and Best R&B Song in 2005.

West dominated the 2000s and 2010s, releasing classic after classic, including genre-defining albums like Graduation, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and The Life of Pablo. Nominated 75 times, he has 24 Grammy wins.

In addition to creating many of the century's most iconic songs, West became one of the biggest names in fashion in the 2010s with his brand, Yeezy.

West was the first non-athlete to have a shoe collaboration with Nike when the Air Yeezy 1 dropped in 2009. In 2013, the artist launched the official Yeezy brand and, in partnership with Adidas, the iconic Yeezy Boost released in 2015, which became one of the biggest fashion empires of the decade.

Over the last several years, the rapper, who had always been known for his polarizing personality, has fallen out of favor with much of the public, including his own fans.

West, who has stated that he has struggled with mental health issues, including bipolar disorder causing manic episodes, has had many public controversies in the eight years. Most notably, his 2022 divorce from Kim Kardashian, which West regularly cites as the source of his struggles, his vocal support for the Make America Great Again movement, and a several-month span of making highly antisemitic remarks.

Now legally known as Ye, he has apologized for his actions and words, citing down moments with his mental health.

Following the legendary artist can feel like a vicious cycle. Whether you choose to still follow him or not, West's affect on music and pop-culture can not be overstated. He is undeniably one of our generation's geniuses of music, fashion and marketing.
