Try one of these three Central Coast pinots

Pinot noirs from all over the world are on display during the annual World of Pinot Noir, held earlier this month in the San Luis Obispo area. But the majority of the wines are from the Central Coast. Next week, I’ll tell you more about the event. For now, consider these recommended pinots from a few SLO County producers.

NAME PRICE COMMENTS

Stephen Ross Wine Cellars 2006 Aubaine Vineyard Pinot Noir, $40

Aubaine Vineyard occupies a beautiful site just five miles from the Pacific. It yields concentrated, darkly colored wines. This example offers concentrated cherry and raspberry flavors, lots of spice and a somewhat muscular structure. There’s a very long finish, too.

Anglim Winery 2005 Fiddlestix Vineyard Pinot Noir, $42

Steve Anglim uses fruit from the Fiddlestix Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation to make his pinot. This wine displays lovely raspberry and cherry flavors, but the flavor profile is dominated by spice and earth. The wine is sold out at the winery, but there may be some in the market. If you can’t find it, look out for the excellent 2006, to be released this spring.

Salisbury Vineyards 2005 Reserve Pinot Noir, $30

The grapes for this wine are grown in the moderate climate of the Avila Valley. The wine is a touch earthy, with pretty cherry fruit and a long, supple finish.
