Bearcats earn girls volleyball home playoff win over Marlborough

The Paso Robles High volleyball team got a match-high 16 kills from Tess Roundtree in a 17-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-22 victory over Marlborough in a first-round CIF-Southern Section playoff match Tuesday in Paso Robles.

“They were a good team but I think having the homecourt advantage helped us,” Paso Robles coach Terry Gutierrez said.

Karlee Anderson had 10 kills and three blocks for the Bearcats, who will play No. 4 seed and Century League champion El Dorado (28-7), which dispatched Ventura in three sets.

CIF officials will have a coin toss today to determine who will host the match, Gutierrez said.

After dropping the first set to Marlborough, the Bearcats clawed back into the match with intensity and hustle, Gutierrez said.

“(Marlborough) was a very respectable team,” Gutierrez said. “But in the end we just outplayed them.”

Marymount 3, Atascadero 0 The Greyhounds fell to nationally ranked Marymount 25-9, 25-17, 25-17.

“I thought we played really well,” Atascadero coach Trent Lunceford said. “The first game wasn’t that close but games two and three were very competitive.”

Kiah Featherstone had five kills and Brianna Norlock added four for the Greyhounds (12-8), who weren’t the only PAC 7 team playing a nationally ranked team.

San Luis Obispo traveled to play at Dos Pueblos, a school ranked in the top 5 nationally by ESPN’s Fab 50.

“It was a tough draw for our schools,” Lunceford said. “We just wanted to come in and see how well we could play against a really good team. But every team makes mistakes. The games were close up until about the 15th or 16th points.”

Dos Pueblos 3, San Luis Obispo 0 Elizabeth Culpepper led San Luis Obispo (11-10) with seven kills in its 25-15, 25-14, 25-18 loss. Alex Attala followed Culpepper with six kills, and Kennedy Peters finished the night with 10 assists.

“I think Dos Pueblos is fifth in the nation, so we went in wanting to have fun,” San Luis Obispo coach Manuel Carter.

Maranatha 3, Morro Bay 0 Ciara Ramos led Morro Bay (11-13, 8-4 Los Padres League) with 10 kills and 13 digs in its 25-16, 25-22, 25-11 loss. Monica Santiago finished the match with 19 digs, and Kylie Gacad had 20 assists.

The Pirates finished their season in second place and, according to coach Brian Plunkett, “It was exciting playing this season. We started three sophomores on varsity and we finished in second place. There’s a lot to look forward to and a lot of potential there.”

Santa Clarita Christian 3, Shandon 0 Kayla Celis led Shandon (12-3, 9-1 Coast Valley League) with a season-high 12 aces in its 25-15, 25-18, 25-22 loss. Jeanette Barrera had six kills and nine digs and Ashley DeBruler finished the night with 15 assists and three aces.

“This was our first year as Coast Valley League champions in school history,” Outlaws coach Daniel Rodriguez said. “Our girls played solid volleyball, but they just made some crucial mistakes.”

Milken Community 3, Coastal Christian 0 Milken Community defeated Coastal Christian in their CIF-Southern Section playoff game, 25-8, 25-8, 25-17.

Taylor Brooks had nine digs and one ace for Coastal Christian (6-5), and Grace Napier added six digs.

Koral Wright added seven digs and two kills for the Conquerors.

GIRLS TENNIS Malibu 10, Arroyo Grande 8 The Eagles (11-7) ended their season with a close loss at Malibu in the Division III playoffs.

The doubles team of Kimmy Turner and Brianna Flood, which finished fourth in the PAC 7 finals, swept all three doubles matches.

“Kimmy and Brianna have been consistent all season at closing out sets,” Arroyo Grande coach Lori Hollister said. “That’s been their strength as a team all year.”

Caitlin Milich and Amber Domako won two of three doubles matches, but Hollister said the Eagles needed to sweep doubles if they were going to be successful.

“We were much stronger in the doubles area overall,” Hollister said. “We should have swept them but we fell just a little bit short and that was the difference.”

BOYS WATERPOLO Thousand Oaks 16, Atascadero 5 Clarke Andros led Atascadero (12-12) with two goals in its 16-5 loss. Levi Adams, Jake Vukovich, and Chad Ponek each scored one goal. Patrick Neil made 13 saves at goal.

“Parick Neil has kept a lot of games in control,” Greyhounds coach Mitch Stafford said. “Today he blocked a lot of situations and kept blocking as (Thousand Oaks) kept coming. He’s a standout player.”

Stafford also said, “This was a good way to end the season. We had a wildcard shot at CIF. We’re a young team — we’re only graduating five seniors — and I think we set a good pace for the future.”
