Cuesta College freshman helps women�s team earn seventh place

Cuesta College�s Kelly Barmann finished second overall Friday at the Southern California Community College Cross Country Championships at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Barmann completed the 5K course in 17 minutes, 24 seconds in leading the Cougars to a seventh-place team finish at Mt. SAC.

Paige Petersen finished 38th with a time of 19:44, and Jennifer Love came in 59 at 20:15.

The Cuesta women advanced to the state meet in Fresno with their seventh-place finish.

�This is the highest team finish the women have ever had in my era here at Cuesta,� Cuesta head coach Brian Locher said.

The Cuesta men finished 17th overall and were led by Paul Denlinger, who finished the 4-mile course in 21:56, taking 39th place. Taylor Castanon (22:20) came in 60th, and Jehan Mirzaei (22:33) finished 76th.

Denlinger, Castanon and Mirzaei qualified for the state meet.

WOMEN�S WATER POLO

Citrus 10, Cuesta 6

The Cougars (11-19) were defeated in the semifinals of the Western State Conference championships in Van Nuys.

Ashley Smith and Heidi Link had two goals apiece for Cuesta, which trailed 4-0 at the half.

�We were not sharp in the first half,� Cuesta head coach Pete Schuler said. �We failed to execute offensively.�

Following the loss, the Cougars will play in the tournament�s third-place game at 10:20 a.m. today against the loser of the Ventura and Santa Monica match.

MEN�S/WOMEN�S SWIMMING

Cal Poly Shootout Day 1

Peter Kline, Chasen Nick and David LaFlamme led Cal Poly, each winning two individual events and swimming on winning relay teams, in its 120-8 and 105-27 wins over Cal Lutheran and Cal State Northridge.

Kline finished the 200-meter freestyle in 1:43.11 and took the 400-meter individual medley in 3:57.38.

Nick won the 100-meter backstroke (53.31) and 100 freestyle (47.30), while LaFlamme won the 50 freestyle (21.46) and 100-meter butterfly (51.11).

Melody White led the Cal Poly women in their 123-14, 111-27, 94-46 wins over Cal Lutheran, Cal State Northridge and Pepperdine.

White won the 100 backstroke in 1:04.09 and too the 500 freestyle in 5:11.41.
