Comments (0) | The San Luis Obispo High girls tennis team swept the singles and doubles titles at the PAC 7 finals Friday in Nipomo.
In singles, two Tigers met in the finals after Abigail Will defeated Arroyo Grande’s Mia McKinstry 7-5, 6-0 and Tori Troesch beat Pioneer Valley’s Caitlyn Brown 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals.
Will defeated Troesch 6-1, 6-2 to repeat as singles champion. The sophomores also met last year in the title match as freshmen with Will coming out on top.
“I think it’s fantastic that they met each other in the finals again,” San Luis Obispo coach Gary Etheredge said. “They played a hard-fought match with some outstanding points and treated each other with a lot of respect. With both being just sophomores, they’ve worked all year long on their games for this.”
McKinstry claimed third with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Brown.
In doubles, San Luis Obispo’s Alex Coffman and Lili Voisinet beat Paso Robles’ Jessica Shubbie and Katharine Redberg 6-0, 6-3 to set up a final against Righetti’s Laura Wong and Lauren Nguyen.
Righetti’s top duo advanced to the final with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over Arroyo Grande’s Kimmy Turner and Brianna Flood.
After losing in last year’s final, Coffman and Voisinet this time claimed the title with a 6-1, 6-0 victory while Shubbie and Redberg won the third-place match 7-5, 6-2.
“Alex and Lili are the true definition of a team,” Etheredge said. “They really complement each other well on the court. The goal all along for them has been to come back and play for the league championship and win. They were very deserving.”
The top two singles players and doubles teams automatically qualified for the CIF-Southern Section playoffs in Carpinteria on Nov. 20.
All of the Tigers who qualified for postseason playthis year went last year and Etheredge said he expects the experience to pay off.
“They’ve got a year behind them at the CIF so they know what to expect,” he said. “I think there performance down there will reflect what they’ve learned.”
Los Padres League Finals
Morro Bay’s Megan Hansen finished second at the Los Padres League Finals in Santa Maria.
Hansen defeated Gaby Franklin of Templeton and Sameeha Husyn of Lompoc to reach the semifinals.
She then defeated Julie Jeyva of Cabrillo 6-2, 7-5 to reach the final. Hansen dropped the final 8-0 to Frankie Eszes of St. Joseph.
With the second-place finish, Hansen advances along with Eszes to the CIF-Southern Section individual finals in Carpinteria on Nov. 20.
BOYS WATER POLO
Santa Barbara 11, Arroyo Grande 8
The Eagles (18-10) got three goals from Eric Marsh in match that Arroyo Grande coach Steven Allen said was a CIF- Southern Section playoff tuneup.
“Santa Barbara is a fantastic team,” Allen said. “We set this up as a way to look at some of our weaknesses heading into the playoffs.”
Luka Vukomanovic had two goals, and goalie John Kullman had 11 saves.
“John allowed us to stay with them throughout,” Allen said.
