closeCal Poly senior Maddy Fletcher missed the women’s golf program record for a single round by one stroke but established a new 36-hole Mustangs mark Monday, finishing second in the Lamkin Grip Cal Poly Invitational at Cypress Ridge Golf.
Cal State Northridge’s Ashlee Nagamine was the only golfer to top Fletcher, and the Matador did it by jumping up 13 spots with a women’s course and tournament record.
Nagamine shot a final-round 66 that included six birdies and no bogeys. She finished one shot ahead of Fletcher with a two-under-par 142 total, climbing from a 14th-place tie following her 76 on Sunday.
Fletcher, who carded an even-par 72 on Sunday, checked in with a 71 Monday for a 143 total, breaking the old school record of 145 set by Hannah Brabb at the Matador Spring Invitational in 2008.
Fletcher now has three rounds of 70, one at 72 and two more at 72 in her Cal Poly career.
Fletcher carded three birdies and two bogeys Monday on the 6,046-yard, par-72 course. Her final birdie came on the 273-yard par-4 seventh hole, and she needed one more to catch Nagamine and force a playoff for the individual title.
But Fletcher settled for pars on the 389-yard par-4 eighth hole and the 454-yard, par-5 ninth to conclude her fall season.
In Fletcher’s last three fall tournaments, the Mayfair High (Los Alamitos) graduate finished second in the Firestone Grill College Invitational at Monarch Dunes and lost to Nagamine in a playoff at the Lady Aztec Fall Classic. She carded a school record-tying 70 in the Lady Aztec Fall Classic.
Besides Nagamine and Fletcher, no other golfer broke par for 36 holes.
Stephanie Kim and Meghan Brenner, both of Northern Arizona, finished tied for third place with 146 totals. Cal State Northridge edged Northern Arizona by one stroke, 591-592, for the team title. Xavier (Ohio) was third at 602, followed by Sacramento State (603) and Cal Poly (611).
Cal Poly’s other scoring golfers were Julia Heath with a final-round 79 and a 153 total, tied for 21st place; Stephanie Yocum with a 76 and a 155 total, tied for 27th place; and Alicia Weber and Miquela Pendleton, both with 78s and 161 totals, tied for 45th.
