Propelled by a three-run showing during the second inning against Urban Youth Academy starting pitcher Jarrett Maloy, the Blues went on to a 4-2 summer collegiate baseball win Wednesday in Compton.
Blues right fielder Jake Atwell went 0 for 4 but reached on a fielder’s choice in the first inning and scored, and he hit a sacrifice fly in the second.
San Luis Obispo’s leading hitters were designated hitter David Van Ostrand (2 for 4 with an RBI) and catcher CJ Cron (2 for 4).
On the mound, Blues (30-7) starting pitcher Ross Stripling picked up the win. He worked six scoreless innings, holding the Urban Youth Academy to only two hits and one walk while striking out nine.
Both of the Urban Youth Academy’s runs came during the ninth inning when it managed to double its hit total on the night to four off Blues reliever Cory Hall.
San Luis Obispo Rattlers 10, Santa Maria Pilots 4
Brock Luker drove in three runs and scored once, and Joe Weik had a two RBI, two-run night as the Rattlers (23-10) beat the Pilots at SLO Stadium.
Luker went 3 for 4 with a double and triple, and Weik was 3 for 4 with a double to lead the Rattlers’ offensive flurry. Bobby Bucker was San Luis Obispo’s only other hitter to record a multi-hit game, going 2 for 5 with two runs scored.
Pilots starting pitcher Spenser Messmore incurred most of the damage, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits in five innings.
Meanwhile, Rattlers pitcher Bob Mott was credited with the win after a five-inning four-run (two earned) outing. The Mission Prep graduate surrendered six hits, four walks and had four strikeouts.
Today, the Rattlers host the Santa Maria Pilots at 6:05 in SLO Stadium.
