Comments (0) | The Paso Robles HIgh wrestling team cleaned up the mat with a pair of PAC 7 dual wins over San Luis Obispo and Righetti on Tuesday in Santa Maria.
The Bearcats opened up the day against the Tigers and picked up a 66-9 win before downing Righetti 42-31 several hours later to maintain a perfect overall dual record and remain tied with Atascadero atop the PAC 7.
“It put us in a position to win league,” said Paso Robles coach Mike Monteiro. “We’re going to give it a hard run.”
Paso Robles’ John Sandy (140) recorded two pins on the day, the first in 20 seconds over San Luis Obispo’s Michael Morrison and then pinned Righetti’s Tommy Solut in 1:49.
Jeff Monteiro (171) also picked up a pair of pins for Paso Robles — the first a 40-second pin of San Luis Obispo’s John Carter and then a sub-two-minute pin of Righetti’s Adam Miranda.
Brady Zubia (130) recorded a pair of wins for Paso Robles, and a handful of others won by forfeit.
San Luis Obispo’s Paul Huang picked up a pin over Righetti’s Anthony Morales and then followed with a 7-6 decision over James Vaughan of Paso Robles.
“The kids are wrestling hard,” Monteiro said. “We’re down to about 30 kids but everyone’s in the room wrestling and working out hard.”
San Luis Obispo lost its other match to Righetti 70-12. ———— Atascadero 58, Pioneer Valley 12; Atascadero 79, Arroyo Grande 0
Atascadero (6-1, 4-0) lost only two matches for a win over Pioneer Valley and then blanked Arroyo Grande to stay undefeated in the PAC 7.
The Greyhounds had two pins apiece from Michael Clemmensen (103), Tyler Byrd (119), Patrick Mendoza (125) and Cody Joy (160).
Morro Bay 55, Santa Ynez 9 Last week Morro Bay displayed a dominant effort over St. Joseph. This week was no different.
The Pirates, 2-0 in the Los Padres League, had a handful of standout performances.
Aaron Mininni (145 pounds) pinned Santa Ynez’s Patrick Clark in 54 seconds, and Dolin Mininni (125) won a convincing 9-3 decision over the Pirates’ Casey Ellis.
Also, Morro Bay’s Wes Hill (135) had a 5-0 decision over Santa Ynez’s Raphael Quiroga, and Aaron Flood (171) felled his opponent in 1:29.
GIRLS WATER POLO Arroyo Grande 10, Atascadero 2
Arroyo Grande’s Alexa May and Hannah Lounsbury each recorded a hat trick, and the Eagles (9-6, 4-0 PAC 7) stayed undefeated in PAC 7 play with a win at Atascadero (7-9, 1-3 PAC 7).
Arroyo Grande goalie Kylie Anderson was called up from JV team for the game and replaced starting goalie Briana Lippert at the half to record four saves and allow only one goal. Lippert collected five saves.
“It was a good overall effort,” Arroyo Grande coach Steven Allen said. “We had a lot of people scoring and the defense was great.”
Righetti 10, Paso Robles 4
Paso Robles’ Valerie Lloyd and Meghan Sullivan each netted two goals for the Bearcats (6-12, 1-4 PAC 7).
“Our defense is improving,” Bearcats coach Chris Jones said. “But they capitalized on some mistakes and came up with some goals.”
Nipomo 7, San Luis Obispo 4 Nipomo’s Julia Tartarian scored three goals for the Titans (10-6, 4-1 PAC 7).
“Link, Lauridsen and Tartarian played good,” Nipomo coach Justin Jewell said.
San Luis Obispo’s Sadie Simmons had three goals, and the Tiger defense had 13 steals in the tough loss. “We just need to make our shots and stop throwing it to the goalie,” Tigers head coach Kristin Poochigian said.
The Tigers are 6-10 overall and 3-1 in the PAC 7.
BOYS BASKETBALL Coast Union 38, Riverdale Christian 34
Coast Union’s Israel Medina had 11 points and six assists for the Broncos (4-12).
North County Christian 71, Coastal Christian 31
North County Christian (7-7, 1-0 Coast Valley League) took advantage of Coastal Christian’s depleted roster, outscoring the Conquerors 42-14 in the last three quarters.
The Crusaders’ Evan Ridel had a game-high 16 points to go with 14 boards.
GIRLS BASKETBALL North County Christian 39, Coastal Christian 32 A 6-0 fourth-quarter run and solid defense gave North County Christian (5-5 overall) its first win in the Coast Valley League.
The Crusaders’ Kelsey Paulus garnered an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double, and teammate Laura Tapanes snared 10 rebounds.
Coastal Christian’s sophomore Grace Napier finished with an impressive 27 rebounds to go with 13 points. “We came out flat and the missed opportunities really, really hurt us,” Conquerors head coach Chris Rivas said.
Coastal Christian falls to 3-8 overall and 0-1 in the Coast Valley League.
BOYS SOCCER Cabrillo 8, Templeton 0
Cabrillo netted six goals in the second half after a 2-0 halftime lead to hand the Eagles a shutout and their fifth straight loss and fourth straight in the Los Padres League.
Templeton’s Tyler Lewis left the game near the end of the first half with a hand injury, and the Conquistadores’ took advantage of the weakness in the Eagles’ backfield the rest of the way.
The Eagles fall to 2-13-2 on the season and 0-4 in the LPL.
Farmersville 5, Coast Union 0
Coast Union couldn’t overcome the loss of leading scorer Angel Gama, who was suspended for this game after being ejected in the Broncos previous matchup.
“They are very good and we could just not play up to the level we are capable of playing at tonight,” Broncos coach Moises Jimenez said.
Rogelio Ramirez scored three goals for Farmersville, a recent CIF-Central Section Division V champion.
The Broncos fell to 7-6-2.
Mission Prep 4, Midland 3
A minute-and-a-half after Mission Prep’s Patrick Foran scored the go-ahead goal to make the score 3-2, the Royals’ Michael Miller kicked in the game-winner.
The Royals (5-7) will next face San Luis Obispo at home on Friday.
GIRLS SOCCER
Farmersville 3, Coast Union 2
Coast Union’s Jasmine Cucio scored the Broncos’ first two goals of the season, as the Broncos almost avoid their eighth straight loss.
“We’re still keeping our head up looking for our first win of the season,” Broncos coach Shelly Becker said.
