Comments (0) | Morro Bay High played well enough in the second half Friday to defend its first-half lead, beating North Torrance 48-37 in a first round CIF-Southern Section Northwest Division playoff game.
Morro Bay (7-4) jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead thanks in large part to a wildly successful running attack that rushed for 574 yards on the night. Sam Crizer kicked off the scoring in the first quarter on a 9-yard run. He later added a second touchdown on a 60-yard run in the fourth-quarter.
North Torrance (9-2) stormed back in the second half, outscoring Morro Bay 14-7 in the third quarter. The Saxons outscored the Pirates again in the fourth but a trio of rushing scores was enough for Morro Bay to hold on for the road win.
Wyatt Gerbracht had 11 rushes for 170 yards and three touchdowns for Morro Bay. Duran Gonzalez was Morro Bay’s rushing leader, running for 202 yards on 16 carries.
The Pirates will face the winner of the Bishop Montgomery/Harvard-Westlake matchup in Morro Bay next Friday.
Serra 47, Templeton 22
With the score 19-10 early in the second quarter and the Eagles driving down the field, things looked good for Templeton.
“We were driving the score,” Templeton coach Don Crow said. “Then came a 14-point swing after they scored on an 80-yard interception return. That killed us.”
Serra took a 26-10 lead into halftime.
“We turned the ball over four times in the game and you just can’t do that versus a team that is 11-0,” Crow said.
Serra receiver Robert Woods caught eight passes for 238 yards and four scores.
Ken Smith led the Eagles (5-6) with 26 rushes for 94 yards.
