After getting on the board early with a 60-yard Nick Tenhaeff touchdown run, Atascadero High’s football team gave up the first-half field position battle and failed to rally late as Gilroy downed the Greyhounds 27-19 Friday in Atascadero.

“We held them to 27 points which is probably the least they’re going to score all year,” Greyhounds coach Vic Cooper said.

Greyhounds (1-2) quarterback Bradley Smet connected with Alex Wolf on a 30-yard reception for Atascadero’s second score, and Sterling Bullard capped the Greyhound scoring when he returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

“We had a couple good drives on

offense,” Greyhound coach Vic Cooper said. “Gilroy’s offense just stayed on the field for the while.”

Pioneer Valley 23, Arroyo Grande 6

After going five consecutive quarters without a score, dating to last week’s shutout loss to Nipomo, the Eagles finally got on the board in the second quarter but were blanked the rest of the way in a nonleague loss.

Arroyo Grande’s lone score was a 7-yard pass from Kyle Kleinsmith to John Alexander.

Kleinsmith, a sophomore, was starting in place of injured quarter-

back Clark Goosen, who is out at least six weeks with a broken right fibula. He finished 15 of 30 for 128 yards and was intercepted twice for the Eagles (1-2).

The Central Coast’s leading rusher, Pioneer Valley’s Dan Ando, rushed for 108 yards on 28 carries. He scored the first touchdown of the game from 2 yards out.

Pioneer Valley (3-0) pulled away on Nick Rucobo’s 32- yard touchdown pass to Albert Squires and sealed it in Chris Cardenas’ 95-yard interception return.

Carpinteria 33, Nipomo 6

Duane Hanna rushed for a 1-yard touchdown to give the Titans an early lead but the Warriors (2-1) put up 33 unanswered points to top Nipomo (1-2).

Carpinteria produced 231 yards of total offense with 156 yardds coming on the ground. Warriors quarterback R. J. Rosborough threw three touchdown passes and ran for two.

Eric Penningroth was the leading Nipomo rusher with 72 yards on 14 carries.

Mission Prep 28, Avenal 14

Dylan Morrow had touchdown runs of 65, 30, and 8 yards to lead the Royals (2-0) to a road win over Avenal.

Morrow, who rushed for 196 yards on 15 carries, also connected with Kevin Laird on a 5-yard pass for a touchdown.

“The boys played tough when we needed to and it was enough to get it done,” Royals coach Brady Lock said.

Oxnard 35, San Luis Obispo 7

Davey Schultz threw for a 22-yard touchdown to account for San Luis Obispo’s only score.

“We had some opportunities to get some turnovers but didn’t do it,” Tigers coach Vic Ecklund said.

Carruthers 27, Coast Union 13

The Broncos fell to 0-3.
