Poly cruises to volleyball sweep of Northeastern

The No. 14 Cal Poly volleyball team rolled through Northeastern with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-19 sweep to close out the Paso Robles Courtyard Marriott Invitational Saturday at Mott Gym.

Junior setter Hailey Fithian paved the way for Cal Poly (4-2) win with her team-high numbers in assists (33), service aces (four) and digs (9).

Senior opposite hitter Kylie Atherstone led the Mustang attack with 11 kills and also had three service aces and four digs.

Outside hitter Ali Waller and middle blocker Dominique Olowolafe each recorded eight kills, while freshman outside hitter Caitlyn Smith floored seven.

CROSS COUNTRY

Cal Poly at Asics UC Irvine Collegiate and Open

Brandon Shirck, Nathan Huerta and Ryan Cosens finished 12th, 13th and 14th, respectively, and were the Mustang “B” team’s top finishers at the Asics UC Irvine Collegiate Open in Irvine.

Shrick finished in a time of 25 minutes 53.90 seconds.

UC Irvine’s Nick Mosey took top honors and finished the 8-kilometer race in 25:14.30. WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cuesta 4, Evergreen Valley 0

Kelsey Yett scored a pair of goals and Esther Neel scored her sixth goal in five games en route to the Cougars’ home shutout.

Brittany Johnston opened the scoring for the Cougars (3-2) when her outside shot hit the far post and deflected into the net.

Yett scored the next two goals, both off rebounds, early in the second half.

Neel capped the scoring when she punched in a shot off of a back-heeled pass from San Luis Obispo High graduate Gracie Babcock.

All three of the Cougars second-half goals were scored within 12 minutes of the start of the half.

Madison Urtusuastegui recorded three saves and the shutout.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Foothill 12, Cuesta 9; Cerritos 18, Cuesta 6 The Cuesta College women’s water polo team

fell to 1-4 following back-to-back losses at its own Central Coast Tournament.

Cuesta’s Morgan Thompson tossed in five goals during the Cougars’ opening game against Foothill.

Thompson and teammate Tammy Barksdale came up with two more goals against Cerritos, but the Falcons cruised to the win after leading 11-3 at the half.

Cuesta goalie Mallorie Green tallied 14 saves on the day.
