USC scored nine runs off four Cal Poly pitchers during the sixth and seventh innings, and the Trojans went on to beat the Mustangs 9-6 in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday.

Kevin Castner was the first pitching victim, giving up three runs in just two-thirds innings of work. The trio of Derrick Saito (one-third inning, one run), Buster Mueller (one-third inning, two run runs) and DJ Mauldin (two innings, three runs) combined to pitch the final 2 2/3 innings.

The Mustangs (22-24), who were trailing 4-0 after the sixth, were able to get back three runs in the top of the seventh when Logan Schafer hit a solo homer and Brent Morel hit a two-run shot.

USC (22-25) put the game away in the bottom of the inning by scoring five times.

The Templeton High boys tennis team swept singles play for nine points and won three more sets in doubles to secure a 12-6 road win over Glenn in the CIFSouthern Section Division IV wild-card round.

After losing their opening set to John Glenn’s No. 1 duo, Joe Zolnoski and Cameron Barnett bounced back with wins of 6-2 and 7-5 against Glenn’ No. 2 and 3 teams.

Jake Miller and Chuck Yates picked up the final doubles point for Templeton with their 6-2 win over Glenn’s No. 2 doubles team.

The Eagles will advance to play Gahr High School on Thursday in the first round.

Gahr (14-3) was undefeated in the San Gabriel Valley League.

Bud Maley used a 3-hybrid to hit a hole in one on the 176-yard, No. 3 hole at Chalk Mountain Golf Course on Tuesday.

Tom Lowrie and John Sargent witnessed the shot.

Morgantown, W. Va.

West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins will earn at least $20 million in guaranteed income over the next 10 years of his new contract,

which includes incentives that could add thousands more.

West Virginia released details of the contract Huggins signed Friday.

Huggins will earn about $1.5 million this year, including a base salary of $250,000 and $1.25 million in supplemental compensation. His salary will increase a minimum of $100,000 per year, and he will receive an annual retention bonus of $100,000 starting next May 1, plus incentives.

The contract also stipulates Huggins can be fired for substance abuse or habitual intoxication affecting his job performance. A West Virginia spokesman said that is a standard clause in employment contracts.

In 2005, Cincinnati president Nancy Zimpher refused to extend Huggins’ contract following his conviction for drunken driving a year earlier. Huggins took a year off, coached at Kansas State for one season and left for West Virginia, his alma mater, in April 2007.

Roger Federer is back on track.

The top-ranked player defeated one of his most challenging opponents, cruising past Guillermo Canas 6-3, 6-3 in the second round of the Rome Masters.

Andy Roddick defeated Mardy Fish 6-1, 6-4 in an all- American matchup. Roddick’s only other match on clay this year was a Davis Cup win in February.

In first-round play, 2001 champion Juan Carlos Ferrero rallied past Nicolas Kiefer 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 to set up a meeting with three-time defending champion Rafael Nadal.

Also, 14th-seeded Tommy Robredo defeated Juan Ignacio Chela 6-4, 6-1, Jose Acasuso eliminated Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 6-2 and Croatian wild card Mario Ancic dispatched Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 6-4.
